Excursion to Matala: A Magical Journey in Crete
Departing from Rethymno around 8:30 AM, our journey lasts approximately 10 hours and promises an unforgettable experience through beautiful landscapes, picturesque villages, and historic locations, authentic flavors, and rich culture.
First Stop: The Traditional Village of Spili. Famous for its “Lion Fountain,” a beautiful spot with 25 lion-head spouts flowing with fresh mountain water. Take a stroll through the cobblestone streets, enjoy a coffee, and visit local shops offering traditional products. This is the perfect opportunity to take a little piece of Crete home with you.
Main Destination: The Legendary Matala. We spent 2.5 hours to enjoy swimming in the golden sandy beach. Famous for its iconic caves , dating back to the Minoan era and were used as tombs, later became a haven for the hippies of the 1960s. You’ll find seaside taverns, cafes, and souvenir shops.
On Our Return: Stop at Agia Galini. The village is built amphitheatrically , where we stay here for 1.5 hours, giving you plenty of time to enjoy your time with traditional shops or relax at the seaside cafes or taverns.
