Excursion to South Crete: Kournas Lake–Argyroupoli–The Gorges–Plakias
In just one day, you’ll discover breathtaking landscapes, traditional villages, historical landmarks, and hidden gems that will leave you in awe.
First Stop: Kournas Lake, Crete’s Only Freshwater Lake. The only natural freshwater lake on the island surrounded by lush green mountains. You can take a walk around its lake, rent a pedal boat, or simply relax at one of the charming cafés and enjoy the view.
Second Stop: Argyroupoli, A Journey Through History. This area has been inhabited since ancient times and has preserved its authentic Cretan character. A short walk will take us through cobbled streets, Roman remains, and Venetian buildings, ending in a beautiful square where you can enjoy a coffee or a fresh juice under the shade of tall trees. Don’t forget to try the local products, such as honey, herbs, and the famous Cretan raki.
Third Stop: Kotsifou Gorge, The Magic of Wild Nature. This impressive gorge, with its towering cliffs is one of the most picturesque routes on the island. Here, we will visit a small stone church built into the rock, a peaceful and awe-inspiring spot.
Fourth Stop: Plakias, Sun, Sea, and Relaxation. A seaside village famous for its sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters of the Libyan Sea. Here, you will have plenty of time to swim, relax on the beach, or explore the village with plenty of seaside tavernas serving fresh seafood and traditional Cretan dishes, such as dakos, lamb cooked over an open fire, and kalitsounia pastries.
Fifth Stop: Kourtaliotis Gorge, A Natural Masterpiece. We will make a stop for photos. Known for its steep cliffs, hidden caves, and a small river that flows through it, creating waterfalls and natural pools.

We start the day with a convenient hotel pick-up from your location in Rethymno and nearby areas.
Our journey begins as we leave Rethymno behind and head towards the stunning landscapes of South Crete.
Our first stop is Kournas Lake, the only freshwater lake on the island. Take in the breathtaking scenery, enjoy a short walk, rent a pedal boat, or simply relax by the lake with a coffee.
Next, we visit Argyroupoli, a historical village rich in Roman and Venetian influences. Wander through its picturesque streets, discover ancient ruins, and enjoy a refreshing drink in the charming village square surrounded by lush greenery and waterfalls.
As we continue south, the landscape transforms into rugged mountain scenery. We stop at Kotsifou Gorge, where a small stone-built church nestled into the rocks offers a peaceful and unique experience.

On our way back, we pass through the Kourtaliotis Gorge, one of Crete’s most breathtaking natural wonders. A short stop allows you to take in the dramatic cliffs, hidden caves, and the small river flowing through the gorge, forming waterfalls and pools.
After a day full of nature, culture, and relaxation, we return to Rethymno with unforgettable memories of South Crete.
The tour includes comfortable transportation with air-conditioned buses, a professional English-speaking guide, and visits to all the mentioned locations. Meals, drinks, and optional activities (such as pedal boat rental at Kournas Lake) are not included.

Yes! The tour is family-friendly, and children will love exploring the lake, the villages, and the beach. However, please note that there is some light walking involved.
No, lunch is not included. However, in Plakias, you will find many seaside tavernas where you can enjoy a meal of your choice.
